Yenta's Bagels was formed to fill a void created over the last decade of bagel franchise mania. Too many bagel shops using basic generic bagel recipes of little or no real bagel roots. Our recipe dates back so far we can't really pinpoint it's origins exactly, but this much we are sure on. Our recipe was brought to Montreal Canada in 1907 and comes from an area that was sometimes Poland and sometimes Russia, depending on the time period, from a family that made bagels back as far as the early 1800's. Once brought to our shores during an early immigration boom the recipe changed to reflect the great quality of Canadian grown and milled wheat, considered by most to be the best in the world.

For the next 70 years it was to be eaten only in a very small neighborhood of Montreal, made famous in the movie Duddy Kravitz. The original formula was passed on to a very select few and after the death of the originator, co-founder of Yenta's Bagels happened to secure it for all the world to enjoy. The formula is mixed in an Ontario, Canada totally Kosher mix plant from special flours from the US and Canada. We unequivocally guarantee that you will not find a mix product like this anywhere in the world.

Canadian flour millers use ascorbic acid as a dough conditioner, unlike the US that uses potassium bromate, The Centre for Science in the Public Interest in the United States has petitioned the FDA to ban the use of potassium bromate in the baking process. The Centre charges that the FDA has known for years that bromate causes cancers in laboratory animals but has failed to ban it. Bromate usage in Canada has been banned since 1994.
